Music Therapy
Music therapy is an evidence-based discipline that uses music as the primary tool in achieving therapy goals within the following domains: communication, social, physical, cognition, emotional, and spiritual. It is delivered by board-certified music therapists and is not reserved for musicians-- nor does it require any prior musical experiences. Music behaves as a medium for processing emotions, trauma, and grief—but music can also be used as a regulating or calming agent for anxiety or for dysregulation, to develop positive coping mechanisms, and much more.
Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy is primarily a talk-based therapy and is intended to help people improve and maintain their mental health and well-being. Psychotherapy occurs when the Registered Psychotherapist (RP) and client enter into a psychotherapeutic relationship where both work together to bring about positive change in the client’s thinking, feeling, behaviour and social functioning. Individuals usually seek psychotherapy when they have thoughts, feelings, moods and behaviours that are adversely affecting their day-to-day lives, relationships and the ability to enjoy life.
Dance Therapy
Dance movement therapy (DMT) is based on the premise that thoughts, feelings and the experience of self are expressed through the body and movement. It is a relational process that integrates emotional, cognitive, physical and social aspects of self.
The DMT approach incorporates knowledge from psychotherapeutic approaches, psychology, sensorimotor and developmental movement, movement analysis and neuroscience. The elements of dance (body awareness, rhythm, time, space, gesture, posture, dynamics) are applied as a framework for exploration, discovery, learning and change.
